1/2 Pound Cookies

I accidentally found out about City Cakes NY. I was doing a search for cake makers online and poof, there it was. They had beautiful cakes and I decided I had to see for myself if they were as scrumptious looking in person as online.

I almost couldn’t find them. They’re in the basement of a building on 18th street. But even if you walked past them, you’d smell the cookies and cupcakes baking and turn right around! The first time I went there, I bought 4 cupcakes. The next time, I bought 6. After that, I bought 12.

After I had eaten my fill of their cupcakes I tried their cookies. I was not aware that their cookies were ACTUALLY half of a pound. Imagine all of the buttery goodness inside those delicious cookies.

They come in four varieties: chocolate chip, triple chocolate spice, hearty oatmeal raisin, and my personal favorite, reese’s pieces peanut butter.

They’re enormous and you’d expect them to be hard and crunchy but they’re not. Deliciously soft and moist, these cookies are making me daydream.

So, my advice is, go for a cupcake (or six) and while you’re there, pick up a cookie (or four.) Make sure you have a friend close by because these monsters are hard to eat on your own!

Your Dessert is on Fire: The Creme Brulee Torch

The best part is to crack the top!If you’ve ever made creme brulee at home, you know that the trickiest part (and also the most fun and exciting, especially for nascent pyros out there) is torching the top of the creme brulee.

The name itself means “burnt cream,” but the purpose of the torch isn’t to burn the creamy filling but to carmelize the sugar at the top into a hard, fragile glaze that’s oh-so-fun to crack with a spoon. You can also use the torch for meringues, baked Alaska, and other yummy backed goods. You might even take a more healthful approach and use your torch to blacken or wilt salad vegetables.

The modern creme brulee torch is often shaped like a large aerosol can or spray gun. Pulling the trigger of the torch will produce a small flame from the edge of the nozzle. Most torches can be adjusted to control the heat and size of the flame.

Creme brulee or kitchen torches have a detachable, replaceable canister for flammable fuel (often butane but sometimes the more powerful propane) that connects to a nozzle with a flint or other ignition material. Some torches include a handy safety lock to prevent kids from getting into mischief with the torch that would be decidedly un-sweet.

A Chocaholic’s Life for Me

Chocolate. It’s good for you! Not milk chocolate, but dark chocolate, and dark chocolate is a color of chocolate. So any chocolate that’s dark, I can eat as much as I want of. Without feeling guilty. Which is great because I love chocolate. Like when I go out to a restaurant and they always have a chocolate item on the dessert menu, and most of the time it’s like a flourless chocolate cake that’s so decadent and rich and I actually have trouble cutting it with a fork because the chocolate is so heavy that I really have to press into it and then I scrape all the leftover deliciousness that is left on the plate, and save the best bite with all the frosting for last, and it’s so heavy and so filling that the only way I can wind up leaving is with a cup of coffee besides, that’s healthy for me. Right?

Okay, even I can’t convince myself to be blind to the facts. Chocolate’s only good good for you when it’s like above 60% cacao. And even then you’re supposed to do some exercise during the day because of all the sugar in it. But it does contain valuable antioxidants, and those are in fruits and stuff. So you don’t have to feel completely guilty when you gorge yourself like a chocolate blogger.
